You probably think that you need a lot of big expensive gear in order to make cinematic images. In reality, there is cinematic lighting all around us that you can use to make great images, if you know what you’re doing. Today on 4 Minute Film School, we’re going to show you three different cinematic looks you can create using only natural light.
In this video, Valentina from the A-Team will walk you through three dynamic setups that can be lit using only natural light. First, she looks at where the sunlight is hitting in the location she’s shooting in. This will affect where she sets up the shot. Next, she uses her camera to control some of the natural light in order to get closer to the exposure she wants. Lastly, she sees how she can modify the natural light to get cinematic shape on her subject. This can be done with light shaping modifiers or parts of the actual set.
The main aspects addressed in this video are negative fill, ND filters, and indirect light. Negative fill refers to using black objects, like fabric, to control how much light is bouncing onto a subject. This is a great way to add shape to your lighting quickly and easily. ND filters are transparent filters you can put in front of your camera to limit the amount of light hitting your sensor. These are crucial for controlling natural light in your scene. Indirect light refers to any light that is bouncing off of something before hitting your subject. Indirect light is always softer than direct light, and can be more beneficial for cinematic lighting.
Once you learn how to take advantage of the cinematic lighting the world has to offer, you’ll be able to get great images no matter where you go. Maybe it’s the sun reflecting off of a white truck parked next to your set. Or maybe it’s the first bit of sunrise peaking over the horizon. As long as you’re patient and know what to look for, you can get amazing lighting.
