The Advantages and Disadvantages of Building a Modular Train Layout

Some model railroaders prefer to build in modules rather than construct one big layout. The big advantage is, that a modular train layout can be dismantled and moved, if you are relocating house. A modular layout can save you from having to build a new layout over again. This is especially helpful if you rent a home, or move locations frequently... which a lot of people do.
A modular layout has other advantages over a fixed layout. The layout can be easily dismantled for displays at train shows, shopping malls and hobby conventions. A modular system can exhibited to the public, for people who would otherwise never see model trains operating. Most fixed layouts are generally only seen by a few invited guests, who get to visit the home, or an open day at the local model train club.
Constructing a modular setup is often less expensive than other types of railroads. They usually have less in the way of mountains and structures, as these can be heavy and complicate the dismantling and relocating process. When properly designed, modules can be set up very quickly, ready to operate in a new location.
There is no excuse for a modular train system to be boring. With careful planning you can make good use of available layout space to provide the best operational interest. They often take up less space too.
However, there are some disadvantages with building a modular layout. There is a limit to what size can be easily moved, even when the track is made up of movable modules. To avoid disappointment, both size and mobility need to be considered before expanding layout modules.
A modular system can also limit the type of layout that can be easily modelled. Many continuous run layouts with enough operational interest could be too large to move. Point to point / switching layouts are usually more suitable, but not everyone wants that type of train operation.
Anything that gets moved around can be prone to damage, so scenery and structures should be built to withstand movement.
The other thing you will need to think about is; how will you move it? The weight and size of each module will need to be easily lifted and carried by a two people. If you plan to carry it on your own, you will need to allow for this when calculating the size and weight of each module.
Over the years I have seen a number of modular layouts with some being more successful than others. The problem many have; is they are too heavy and awkward to move. Others get easily damaged due to their poor design. Some also experience operational problems when they are reassembled.
It is critical for the design and construction methods to allow for easy and safe relocation. After all, they need to travel safely intact from and from a train show, or wherever the layout is being exhibited.
Layouts can, and do get damaged in transit, so both construction and handling needs to be carefully planned. The operational enjoyment also can be affected by a poorly constructed modular layout.
If you are planning to build a modular layout, here are some construction ideas you may find helpful:
Decide on a set of construction standards for building each module before starting any construction. Set yourself some rules and guidelines. Decide in advance, just how you are going to dismantle, move and reassemble the layout each time it needs to be transported.
Use good quality timber, or lightweight strong metal framing for your layout bench work. This should not be too heavy, or awkward to move, but needs to be strong enough to withstand the stresses and strains of relocation.
Give the frame and baseboard surfaces two coats of paint to help protect them from moisture, scratching and chipping.
Set a standard for electrical connectivity between modules.
Set a standard way of aligning tracks across module joins. Use the one method rather than adopting various ways of keeping tracks aligned across module joins.
Build one module to a particular stage before starting the next one. That will involve getting all track laid on a module before starting on the next one.
And, above all, do not rush the project. Take your time and enjoy the experience of building your modular layout.
