Most expats confuse a visa with a residence permit — but they’re not the same.
A visa only allows you to enter Germany.
A residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) allows you to actually live and work here long-term.
👉 Visa = entry ticket.
👉 Residence permit = permission to stay.
If you’re from outside the EU, you usually enter on a visa and then apply for a residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde.
If you’re from the EU, you don’t need a visa — but you still need to register and prove your right of residence.
