This song, written by the Piedmont Raging Grannies, reminds us that it is up to us, We the People, to save our democracy. There isn't anyone who will. What we do now will determine the future. As the song says: We are the Guardrails now.
Why are we wearing red hats instead of our Grannie hats?
Red hats were worn by Norwegians when they were occupied by Nazi Germany as a symbol of resistance and national pride. On 26 Feb 1942, the Nazis issued a proclamation outlawing the wearing of red hats. Since we published this video on 26 Feb 2026, we all wore red hats to commemorate the anniversary of the proclamation and in resistance to the current regime.
A Republic If You Can Keep It
Tune: Auld Lang Syne/We Shall Not Be Moved
Lyrics by the Piedmont Raging Grannies
Should our Constitution be forgot
A-and never brought to mind?
Its framers’ efforts come to naught
Democracy declined?
To keep it or to let it go?
That choice is ours to make,
Generations whom we’ll never know
Will walk the path we take.
Our path must follow freedom’s light.
We will not … kneel or cow’r.
This profound ideal is worth the fight.
It’s the people who have pow’r.
Speak out in one voice, strong and clear,
Renew our sacred vow.
For everything that we hold dear,
We are the guardrails now
(Quick transition to “We Shall Not Be Moved”
Sing twice)
Pay attention, we’re the guardrails now.
Did we mention, we’re the guardrails now.
We have the power to rescue our democracy.
We are the guardrails now!
