Historic Buildings Rescued
The historic buildings of Britain are a shared heritage, witnesses to our past. Many important buildings have been lost. The Landmark Trust is a charity committed to rescuing buildings in distress, sensitively restoring and re-purposing them as holiday lets, giving them a new and sustainable lease of life. This series explores the stories some of these properties can tell. History Rich is grateful for access to the Landmark Trust’s gallery of images.
Part One. [Spectator sport]
Swarkestone Pavilion in south Derbyshire, built in 1630-32, is the only part of Swarkestone Hall to survive intact after damage during the Civil War and later neglect. It served as a grandstand from which spectators could watch sporting activities, most probably bowls, taking place in the enclosed field below.
