Hello and welcome to this presentation of the Karl Marx model. It is a 1:250 scale model and it is 66.5 cm long. The kit is published by Mdk Verlag in Berlin.
As you can see, it is a beautiful model with lots of lovely details. The Karl Marx was built in 1971 at the Warnow shipyard in Warnemünde. She was the first of a total of 8 ships built until 1975. They were intended for the combined transport of general cargo and containers, heavy goods and industrial equipment, refrigerated cargo and also bulk cargo.
The individual cranes can be rotated in all directions like in the original and there is even a swimming pool built into the aft deck. The individual containers are also carefully printed.
The first two units were built for the GDR shipping company Deutsche Seereederei. The second ship was consequently called Friedrich Engels. The other 6 ships were intended for export and all went to India.
These ships were the fastest ever built at a shipyard in the GDR and ran up to 22 knots. This shortened the travel time from Rostock to East Asia and back by a week. They were 166.40 m long and could carry 12,640 t. The range was 16,000 nm and they had a crew of 28 men, accommodated in very comfortable cabins.
The automated machine system was set up for 24-hour watch-free and remote-controlled operation from the bridge.
When they were put into operation, it turned out that, despite their impressive appearance, the two ships built for the DSR were very susceptible to repairs and their fuel consumption was far too high. Sea behavior also proved problematic.
The Karl Marx was taken out of service in 1990 and scrapped in Bombay.
What is striking about these ships is their short operating life, some of which is well under twenty years. However, this relatively short operating time was also observed on the majority of other fast freighter types of the same era, which can be explained by the fact that general cargo was introduced into containers at the same time as they were introduced.
Now the model is finished. I check again whether the side walls are smooth and whether there is any warping. It took me a total of 50 hours to create the model.
This brings me to the end of the report. I thank you for taking your time and say goodbye until the next film.
