The main complaint of the Gen 1 switches was that they weren’t as crisp as some mechanical switches. These Gen 1 switches were also developing defects (crunching and creaking). With the Gen 2 switches they claim to have improved the speed, reliability/durability, tactility/acoustics to make them more on pair with top-of-the-line mechanical switches while also reducing defects.

Specifically, they reduced tolerances for pre/post travel (meaning less variation and less bad units), increased springback force (making them crisper), and left actuation force unchanged. They are also still continuing to make changes to make them even better.

Long-term results that I have found since making this video is that the Gen 2 switches are a lot better than Gen 1 switches. They feel crisper and rarely develop defects while surpassing most mechanical switches except for the best of the best mechanicals.

I constantly get asked how to ensure I have a Gen 2 switch. The only way to ensure you get a Gen 2 switch is to buy a colored variant (white, pink, or Cyberpunk 2077) as they all came out after this Gen 2 switches was made. The black variant still has Gen 2 switches but if you bought a model before they made this change (which started several months ago) you could still get a Gen 1 switch. As time goes on (since stock will sell out) the better your chance of getting a Gen 2 switch. But there is no way to confirm.

FAQ’s:

1. The Mercury White edition and Quartz edition are NOT limited edition.
They will be a normal part of their lineup. The Mercury White Edition is exclusive to Razer.com. Which means you can only order it through them and it will NOT be available through other retailers such as Amazon. In regard to the Quartz edition it is currently available from Razer.com and also Bestbuy.com. I don’t know if this will be available at other retailers or not. As of this video neither the Mercury White or Quartz editions are available through Amazon. I also don’t know if they will be shipping internationally. I would assume if you can get other Razer devices currently these will also be available in time.

2. I do not know if the Mercury White and Quartz editions will be available for other models.
Razer is stingy on releasing different colors for their peripherals and when they do it is usually only for a particular product line. In this case the Viper Ultimate won out over the Viper and Viper Mini. That doesn’t mean colors won’t be coming for those. I am just not aware of that happening. Razer Con is on October 10, 2020 so I would assume any new colors or perhaps the rumored Razer Viper Ultimate Mini will be announced at that time. At least that is what I am hoping for.

3. The White and Quartz edition do have RGB lighting with up to 16.7 million colors which is adjustable via Razer Synapse 3. You must have the program open in order to save the lighting. As Razer is ridiculously behind the times and DOES NOT allow you to save your lighting directly to the device itself.

4. The Razer Rep on Reddit reported the best way to get a new batch of a RVU is to buy directly from Razer and the second-best bet would be anywhere that is constantly selling them so their stock refreshes regularly.

5. As far as I know you cannot connect multiple Razer devices to the same wireless dongle. The only company that I know does this is Corsair. Although they may have a beta where is is becoming available. I'd google search it.
