Jon-Paul Maria's career has been spent making discoveries that advance the field of ferroelectrics. These materials are used in everything from data storage to medical sensing devices to wireless communications.
His most recent discovery, which earned our Paul F. Robertson Award for Research Breakthrough of the Year, is maybe his most influential yet. Maria discovered a way to make materials that aren't ferroelectric become such. In fact, new bulk ferroelectrics can be created using just a sliver of ferroelectric material. This discovery, dubbed "proximity ferroelectricity" opens the door for greatly reduced computational energy and a range of new and improved devices.
