Winter in the NSW Northern Tablelands is typically a period of low-quality feed, paddocks thick with Chilean needle grass and frost-affected African lovegrass. On his 460-hectare farm near Glen Innes, Sid Brummell reliably fills this feed gap with mixed species annual forage crops. Growing mixes has not only aided the successful renovation of weedy paddocks, but also reduced crop failures as the inherent diversity allows a hedging of bets against seasonal variability. For Sid this all adds up to high-quality pasture and consistently strong livestock performance.
