Azerbaijani Jazz is a unique musical style that blends traditional Azerbaijani mugham (a complex system of modes and improvisation) with Western jazz harmonies and rhythms. It emerged in the mid-20th century, with Vagif Mustafazadeh recognized as its founder. His work combined the emotional depth of mugham with the freedom of jazz improvisation, creating a new genre often called “Jazz-Mugham.”
This fusion inspired later generations of Azerbaijani musicians, such as Aziza Mustafazadeh (his daughter), who carried the style onto international stages. Today, Azerbaijani jazz is known for its spiritual, improvisational character and its ability to bridge Eastern and Western musical traditions.
