During World War II, one man changed the way bombers fought in the Pacific.
Paul “Pappy” Gunn was not a famous general or a top fighter ace. Instead, he was a brilliant field mechanic and pilot who turned ordinary bombers into devastating gunships.
Working in the Southwest Pacific under General Douglas MacArthur, Gunn began modifying the B-25 Mitchell bomber by installing powerful .50-caliber machine guns directly into the nose of the aircraft. These modifications transformed the bomber into a low-level attack aircraft capable of destroying ships, airfields, and military bases.
His innovations helped create one of the most feared attack aircraft configurations in the Pacific War.
In this documentary, we explore:
• The life of Paul “Pappy” Gunn
• How the B-25 Mitchell was turned into a flying gun platform
• The dangerous low-level attacks on Japanese convoys
• The role of innovation in the Pacific Theater
• How one mechanic helped change aerial warfare
This is the story of the man who turned bombers into flying machine guns.
