The Tocobaga people, once numbering in the thousands around Tampa Bay, were wiped out within generations. Their culture, language, and way of life were erased — but not forgotten.

Local legends and oral histories suggest that the land itself may carry memory. Some believe the suffering and mass death left behind a curse — not as literal magic, but as a symbolic reminder of unresolved injustice and stolen land. Whether myth or metaphor, the idea speaks to the deep trauma inflicted on this place.
