Fluff for the Future — Jackie & Shadow Prepare the Egg Cup

Something important arrived at the nest today—and it wasn’t a stick.
Shadow opened the morning carrying fresh fluff, carefully spreading the soft material into the nest bowl. Mixed with grasses, reeds, and pine needles, the fluff helps shape the egg cup—a shallow depression at the center of the nest designed to cradle eggs and protect newly hatched chicks.
This soft lining plays a vital role in insulation, keeping eggs and young eaglets warm and secure during incubation. Jackie will handle most of the incubating, especially during poor weather, though Shadow has proven he enjoys his turns as well—when allowed.
Later in the day, more sticks arrived, along with a few comical challenges. Jackie struggled with a branch that became lodged between her legs, then untangled herself again from another stubborn stick. Calm, patient, and determined, she worked through each obstacle before returning to the attic lookout.
Throughout the afternoon, the pair continued shaping the nest, pausing for beaky kisses, love bumps, and quiet bonding moments. Distant mating calls echoed through the habitat as Jackie spent time perched alone on the front porch, watching as clouds rolled in and rain followed.
With fluff now added to the nest bowl and preparations well underway, Jackie and Shadow are moving steadily toward the next chapter of the season.
