i still get scared even when i rewatch this

I also played redcandlegame’s first game (Detention):    • DETENTION. (red candle games' first game) ...  

For context, we picked up this game because we had just finished Outlast and wanted something new – and we were curious about how scary a game that had been banned on steam could be. But over the course of its three hour run time – it’s not a very long game – instead of seeking out jumpscares, we were all gripped by its story and narrative. By the end I personally was so engaged that I had completely shut up – I was just in it, ya know?

Devotion is an atmospheric, first-person exploration game. It’s a deep dive into familial pressure, religion, independence and mental health, and the layering of its themes set against the backdrop of Taiwanese culture makes for a journey so emotionally cognizant and enthralling it just gets you HOOKED. Its mechanics are simple; you mostly traverse through different eras of the same apartment building, picking up items of note to discover memories or revisit the past. It’s not the only game with this mechanic, but combined with the depth of its storytelling and incredible level-design, it made for one of my favourite horror game experiences – if not, purely one of my favourite gaming experiences EVER.

And because of how amazing I personally found the experience to be, in my genuine honest opinion, if you have never played this game before but plan on picking it up at some point, I think you shouldn’t spoil the experience by watching this. Go in blind. Actually even if you don’t have the time or money to pick it up yourself, I’m going to link someone’s full no-commentary gameplay that I think you should watch instead. (And then come back to this later.) (The reason why I’m linking someone else’s no commentary full gameplay rather than our own full recording is cos we talk a lot and go off tangent a lot and also we constantly get up to get snacks / go for pee breaks – which can be super distracting specially for an immersive-style game.)
