Subject: Spending TIME with the children of Mary's Meals!

Getting to a Mary’s Meals school is always a journey… It wouldn’t feel right if it weren’t; after all, I’m in good company! You have the teachers, cooks and even the children who get up before the sun rises so that they can reach their schools (2-4 miles away)by 7:15x-apple-data-detectors://1. With fifteen million people living in malawi and only 5- 8% of them owning cars... foot travel needs to start early (I have to wonder how anyone ever gets anywhere on time)!! With all that it takes to get to school I am always so moved by the generosity and kindness in the way the community greets you when you arrive.

All week we were greeted with BIG smiles, waves, thumbs up, cheers, high fives and lots of little people hugs. The children sang songs, the cooks showed you around the kitchen, and with pride the teachers shared the number of children who are coming to school and how food is making a difference in their lives. I danced in celebration with the elders of a community in thanksgiving for Mary’s Meals coming to their schools. And on Friday we made a surprise visit to two of the schools delivering close to 3,000 brand new (donated) backpacks!!! These back packs were filled with: school supplies, clothing, towels, toys, and toothbrushes WITH paste… to best describe the excitement I’d call it Christmas morning on steroids! (Video below)

At the end of our day on Friday, I noticed a few kids staring at me from a distance. I was told by one of the local drivers that the kids keep looking at us because we are white and we are Americas, this makes them curious. They like us AND they want to know more about us. As I walked away I started to smile... I felt the same way! AND together by the grace of God we shared the JOY of community... we are blessed!
