The Hamer tribe celebrates the turning of boys into men with a bull jumping ceremony ritual. A boy must jump across bulls lined up in a row. If he makes it he becomes "A Maza - Accomplished One" and is entitled to select his first bride amongst the village women. If he fails, he must wait another year to try again.
The women takes pride in showing their devotion to the jumper through pain. They dance around singing while taunting men into whipping them with a cut out branch. The greater the pain, the greater their devotion, and the more likely they are to be chosen as a wife by any man who successfully jumped the bulls.
The ceremony takes place in Omo Valley in the Southern part of Ethiopia. If you are interested to know more about the Bull Jumping Ceremony, read our blog about it here: https://absoluteethiopia.com/the-cult...
