Trg Slobode (in Serbian — “Freedom Square”) is located in the very center of Novi Sad, in the Old Town district (“Stari Grad”). Around it are key architectural landmarks, styles from different eras, and it holds great importance as a social and cultural hub.
The square began to take shape in the 18th century, when the city center shifted along Zmaj Jovina Street to its current location.
The name of the square changed over time: during the Austro-Hungarian period, it was called “Trg Franz Joseph.” After World War I, it became “Trg Oslobođenja” (“Liberation Square”). After World War II, it received its current name, “Trg Slobode.”
In the past, there was a large market here (“Velika pijaca”), making it a key center of city life.
Here are some notable landmarks on or near the square:
Gradska kuća (City Hall) — a Neo-Renaissance building constructed in 1893–1895.
Crkva imena Marijinog (Name of Mary Church) — the largest Catholic church in the city, located on the square, in Gothic/Neo-Gothic style.
Svetozar Miletić Monument — a monument to him stands in the center of the square.
Buildings of banks, hotels, and former important enterprises surrounding the square: for example, the building known as the former “JNA House”/Vojvodanska Bank on Trg Slobode.
