As we witness the return of war in Europe, Asia is also facing a deteriorating security environment, with a more diverse and unpredictable spectrum of threats. We see conflicts, military build-ups and aggressions, and sources of instability. Hybrid threats, disinformation campaigns and cyber-attacks grow both in frequency and impact. Access to the high seas, outer space and the digital sphere is becoming increasingly contested. We are facing growing attempts at economic and energy coercion.
The EU’s latest security strategy is the first of its kind. The document – A Strategic Compass for Security and Defence – was formally adopted by the member states one month after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Its preparatory process lasted almost two years and included the first ever joint threat analysis. Beyond doubt, the war in Ukraine, has put the Compass in the spotlight and given it new and immediate importance. It set forth a series of tools and measures to reinforce the EU and its Member States’ capabilities and make the EU a stronger and more capable security provider by 2030.
The French, Czech and Swedish Embassies and the EU Delegation in Singapore organise a discussion with an EEAS official and three experts from each countries about the relevance of the Compass in the context of the Ukraine war and for the Indo-Pacific region. France is currently chairing the EU Council and Czechia and Sweden will take on the Presidency after; moreover their experts will likely bring different perspectives to the table.
