Trolling crankbaits is one of my favorite ways to fish, and to keep my set up simple I use the same rods/reels/line for when I'm fishing shallow water and deep water. This way, I know my numbers are always correct, and I know exactly where and how my bait is fishing in the water column.
I use a leadcore mainline with a 12 pound Berkley Trilene XT leader, which is always just about under two rod lengths. I connect that with a Spro Power Swivel, and then a snap down to my crankbait.
