Growing spinach can be a struggle in warm climates, but here's what we've learned!
Start your spinach in the late fall or in the winter. We prefer to start them in trays and then plant them up when they're ready. This lets me protect the seedlings from extreme temperatures and monitor moisture levels.
Spinach loves good soil with lots of organic matter. That provides nutrients and retains moisture. Along with mulch, we do everything we can to keep our plants happy. If spinach starts to wilt, you can easily lose it.
On warmer days, you may also want to use a row cover! We use the lightweight version to protect the plants (we had a 90-degree day in December and hail in January!) no matter what the weather throws our way. It also helps keep harmful insects at bay.
When you're ready to chow down, harvest around the center. This helps open up the plant to airflow for a healthier plant too!
