The Cauvery dispute has erupted inside the Tamil Nadu Assembly, with Chief Minister Vijay and Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin trading sharp words over Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu dam.

Udhayanidhi demanded a special discussion and an all-party meeting, arguing that Tamil Nadu’s political parties must present a united front against the project. Vijay rejected the demand, saying there was no need for an all-party meeting and insisting that Tamil Nadu would not compromise on its river-water rights.

At the same time, Vijay defended his willingness to explore dialogue with Karnataka, saying he was prepared to “bear insults” if talks could benefit the people of Tamil Nadu.

With Mekedatu remaining one of the most emotionally and politically charged issues in the Cauvery dispute, the question now is whether Vijay’s approach can balance Tamil Nadu’s water interests, political pressure and the possibility of dialogue with Karnataka.
