Today, members of Mahmoud Khalil’s legal team are at the U.S. District Court in New Jersey in Newark arguing that Mr. Khalil's challenge to his unlawful detention and attempted deportation by ICE should remain in the District of New Jersey. This hearing comes after the Southern District of New York ruled that the case should be heard in New Jersey. Rather than accept the ruling, the Trump administration re-filed their motion to transfer Mr. Khalil’s case to Louisiana.
Baher Azmy, Center for Constitutional Rights legal director was in court arguing that New Jersey is the proper venue for Mr. Khalil’s case to be heard. Baher and other members of Mr. Khalil’s legal team will be available for comment outside the courthouse after arguments.
