Liquor worth ₹32 crore was sold across the state during New Year celebrations, raising concerns over rising addiction. Around the same time, marijuana worth several crores of rupees was seized in Bhubaneswar, reportedly brought in for New Year festivities.

Former Excise Superintendent Sudarshan Nayak described these developments as a serious warning sign for the state. He said the increasing sale of alcohol and the flow of drugs indicate a growing menace that could have long-term social consequences.
