Rapid advances in genetic and genomic methods permit a better understanding of population structure and hybridization in wild species. This includes areas where recent population monitoring has shown shifts in species ranges. Certain range changes have led to contact among long-isolated populations, and also instances of human-induced hybridization. In some regions, we are observing increasingly isolated populations with reduced genetic diversity, where we need long-term monitoring to follow population trends and any needs for conservation actions.
𝐀𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐤 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐧 is a wildlife biologist and researcher in conservation genetics and ecology. Her recent studies include genomic analyses of wild species and domestic populations at risk in Europe and Canada, including bison, cattle, dogs, and wolves. She is interested in contemporary evolution resulting from human activities, and how we can best preserve wild species and their habitats in the face of rapid environmental change. She has a strong interest in applied conservation genetics, and in projects that integrate ecology, evolution, and conservation and connect these fields to human dimensions including ethics and human-wildlife interactions. As a university lecturer, she is involved in teaching several courses in conservation biology and conservation genetics at the University of Ljubljana and Aalborg University (Denmark). She has been involved in the successful application of two international LIFE projects (LIFE WolfAlps EU, LIFE WILD WOLF) and in the implementation of three international LIFE projects (LIFE LYNX, LIFE WolfAlps, WILD WOLF) as well as in numerous scientific projects. She is a member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission "Conservation Genetics Specialist Group" and a co-founder of DivjaLabs Ltd.

WWF Adria & WWF CEE are implementing 2 LC projects:
1. “Large Carnivores in Central and South -Eastern Europe - connected and coexisting with people” (funded by WWF Belgium)
2. „Leveraging impact of Large Carnivore conservation efforts in Central and South -Eastern Europe“ (funded by WWF Sweden)
These projects were focused on genetics and genomics od wildlife in several of its activities, which is why this workshop was needed.
