We developed a system to check the emergency landing gear system of the Twin Beech or Beech 18. If you do it the way the book says it feels like the aircraft wants to jump off of the jacks. It is scary to say the least. Our method uses sand bags and a carpet for friction along with rope and bungee cords to absorb the shock to let the landing gear down smoothly and safely.
You can build such an apparatus yourself cheaply to test your landing gear properly.
It is imperative that the Beech 18 emergency gear system is tested with the full weight of the landing gear on the clutch. We have found, both in the air and on the ground, that the gear system will test okay with the gear near the vertical because there isn't very much weight on the clutch teeth. Then when the clutch is under the full load, when the gear is fully retracted, the emergency system has failed. This is why it is so important to test the system with the gear fully retracted.
Our system allows you to do this by letting the gear down gently.
