Sandy and Luna. Day 47. Beaky kisses. 😘💛
In the middle of a morning on May 21st — between the feedings and the wingers and the fish deliveries and the territorial activity — Sandy and Luna stopped everything and just loved each other.
A gentle lean. A soft touch of beaks. Two eaglets who spent their earliest days side by side in the nest that Jackie built and Shadow stocked with fish — now 47 days old, dark feathers spreading across their backs, growing into the raptors they were born to be — still finding time for this.
Still choosing this. 😘
The FOBBV recap noted it simply: Luna and Sandy giving each other beaky kisses. When Sandy and Luna touch beaks or groom each other they are not just being adorable. They are building a sibling bond that may last their entire lives.
Bald Eagle siblings who share a nest through fledging often maintain familiarity into their early years — recognising each other's presence in shared territory long after they leave the nest. The bond that Sandy and Luna are building in these beaky kiss moments above Big Bear Lake is real, biological, and lasting.
At Day 47, Sandy and Luna are also at the stage where their feather development is at its most visible and dramatic. The dark brown scapular feathers spreading across their backs are their permanent juvenile plumage — the feathers that will carry them on their first flight across Big Bear Valley. The grey fluffy down you can still see on their heads and necks will fade as those juvenile feathers grow in fully.
The eaglets you see in this close-up are days or weeks away from their first flight. But today — beaky kisses. 😘🦅💛
