“Hari Jones mentions the first Union African American regiments and their state of origin as organized under Congress’ Militia Act of 1862. The creation of the Bureau of Colored Troops in May 1863, after the issuance of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, led to increased recruitment of African American soldiers and officers in the North and South into the United States Colored Troops. The service experiences of these units are also described.”
