It's Not You, It's Me | John

Описание: For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. — John 3:17-19

So these words take us back to two analogies John introduced in chapter one. First, the light which represents understanding. Second, the darkness which represents ignorance. Therefore John's point, and Jesus's point to Nicodemus, is that he (Jesus) has come to bring understanding because we have been living in ignorance. Christ is here to save the world from perpetual ignorance.

Or we could say it this way.

Jesus is not here to condemn the way you are living. The way you are living is condemning yourself. You've just gotten used to living this way. You see it as normal, but it's not. It's ignorance. Jesus is here to save you from your own ignorance. 

But we can only see it this way when we start seeing ourselves as the problem.

As C.S. Lewis once said:

"What you see and what you hear depends a great deal on where you are standing. It also depends on what sort of person you are."

Lewis's point. And Jesus's point. And John's point is the problem is you. And that's the bad news people have a hard time accepting. They don't think they are the problem. Thus they live in ignorance.

And that's where ignorance ends, and understanding begins for the follower of Jesus. Realizing that understanding comes from God to ignorant man so that we see the end of our condemnation and the beginning of understanding that leads to life. And by reading God's Word together one day at a time, God illuminates our minds one day at a time.

ASK THIS: Is there a place in your life you need understanding?

DO THIS: Ask God to illuminate it for you.

PRAY THIS: God, give me your understanding.

PLAY THIS: Your Ways.
