This is a really fun "modal" tune that lays out quite well on the dobro. Get it up to speed and you can really blow the socks of your local bluegrass jammers. It's also frequently played (with some twists) in the old-time Appalachian scene.

If you aren't familiar with modes yet, don't worry. The technical details are useful to understand, but don't let it discourage you if you haven't learned every music theory concept yet. This tune uses the mixolydian mode, which I think of as a modification of the major scale. Just flatten the 7th degree of the scale: 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7 1 and away you go!

So our A major scale is slightly modified to become this: A B C# D E F# G A

A savvy mind might also perceive that this is the D major scale...just starting and ending on A. Interesting! No wonder it lays out pretty well on dobro. I wonder what other fiddle tunes we could use that knowledge for. Can you identify some other ones that sound similar?
