The Rasikbeel Mini Zoo was established with an area of 12Ha land in the year of 1997 as Bochamari Deer Park and in the year of 2003, The Mini Zoo is themed to display the animals found in the locality particularly in Northern Bengal plains in wild conditions and to appraise the visitors regarding their natural habitats and their conservation values. Objectives of the zoo is to house anddisplay of broad representatives of diverse and endangered animals and birds with emphasis on the Indian fauna belonging to the region considering the climatic conditions suitable for them, to display animals in pleasant and aesthetic natural settings in accordance with their habit and habitat specifications and to ensure standard animal health care and establish self sustaining populations of genetically and behaviourally viable animals.
The Rasikbeel Mini Zoo is to act as a centre for receiving ill, injured, seized and orphaned animals of Coochbehar District only for temporary shelter, treatment and release the same in wild subject to availability of suitable habitat or otherwise scientific upkeep with strict adherence to the guidelines framed for the purpose.
The Park is under the charge of Divisional Forest Officer, Cooch Behar Forest Division, who is the Ex-Officio Director.
Central zoo Authority vide CZA) granted recognition to this Centre up to 31st December, 2015. The Park houses 72 Mammals, 7 Birds and 10 Reptiles. Average yearly visitors are more than 86,000. The zoo is opened from 9.30 am to 5.00pm except weekly holiday.It will take one and half hours from Toofangunge. It is 74 km from Alipur Duar. The nearest railway station is New Cooch Behar, 35 km away. Cars are available for hire at the station.
Nearest places of interest are Buxa Tiger Reserve,Rajabhatkhawa, Jayanti. Present address of the Park is CoochBehar Division, Dist: Cooch Behar,
Govt. of West Bengal established the West Bengal Zoo Authority in the year 2009 for the development and scientific management of Govt. controlled zoos in the state. There are 12 Govt. controlled zoos in the state of West Bengal which are presently being managed by the West Bengal Zoo Authority. The West Bengal Zoo Authority is also managing/ funding 8 (eight) specially established Conservation Breeding Centre in the state. Govt. of West Bengal provides Grant-in-Aid annually to the West Bengal Zoo Authority for the proper scientific management and development of zoos in the state. More than fifty laks people visit Zoos in West Bengal. The internal Resources raised by the zoos including the gate entry collection are also utilised for the maintenance and development of zoos.
The mission of West Bengal Zoo Authority is to provide exemplary care to the Zoo's wildlife population in a planned manner to ensure eco- system based naturalistic animal enclosures which will help in conservation breeding of rare and endangered species through best practices of Zoo management, veterinary care and inspiring current and future generations to become active citizens in wildlife conservation through nature education and awareness program.
