The Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) is a surface-to-surface missile system that can strike targets deep within enemy territory. It's a precision-guided weapon that's used by the US military to attack time-sensitive targets.
Here are some key features of the ATACMS:
Range: The ATACMS has a maximum range of 190 miles (300 km), which is longer than the range of other US missiles, rockets, and cannons.
Launch platforms: The ATACMS can be launched from the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) M270.
Submunitions: The ATACMS uses tungsten fragmenting walls on its submunitions, which are designed to be effective against both equipment and personnel.
Guidance: The ATACMS uses GPS-aided inertial navigation guidance.
History: The ATACMS was first used in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm.
Delivery to Ukraine: The US secretly provided long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine in support of their war against Russia.
