00:00 Introduction
The Smart #3 marks a significant shift in Smart’s identity. Once known exclusively for tiny city cars, the brand is now entering the compact electric SUV segment with a vehicle that is larger, more refined, and capable of long-distance travel. It maintains some design nods to its roots, but in almost every way, this is a new kind of Smart.
Developed in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz and built by Geely in China, the Smart #3 shares its platform with the Volvo EX30. The result is a car that combines European design with proven EV components, offering a strong alternative in the growing electric crossover market.
03:08 Exterior design of the Smart #3
The Smart #3 presents a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette that is more coupé-like than most compact SUVs. With a length of 4.40 metres and a height of 1.56 metres, it sits closer to a sedan in proportions while still offering SUV practicality. Distinctive elements include a continuous front light bar, flush door handles, and organic rear light shapes.
06:22 Traveling on the Smart #3
The Smart #3 is equipped with battery options ranging from 49 to 66 kWh (62 kWh usable), providing a WLTP range of up to 455 km depending on the version. It supports road trips and daily driving alike, with the inclusion of a heat pump helping to improve real-world efficiency.
13:47 Charging the Smart #3
DC charging capability peaks at 150 kW, allowing for a 200 km range recharge in just 20 minutes under optimal conditions. AC charging is also a highlight, supporting up to 22 kW — a rare feature at this price point — enabling full top-ups in under 3 hours on compatible chargers.
The Smart #3 includes route planning with charging stops, though it occasionally underestimates battery consumption and overlooks nearby stations. Nevertheless, it remains highly functional and convenient, especially when combined with Spain’s increasingly reliable charging infrastructure.
17:13 Driving the Smart #3
Acceleration is brisk, with the tested model achieving 0–100 km/h in just 5.24 seconds — faster than the official 5.8-second figure. This performance, paired with rear-wheel drive, offers an engaging and sporty driving experience not always found in the compact EV segment.
The suspension setup is on the firmer side, providing good body control and grip, particularly in corners. Brabus variants add dual-motor all-wheel drive and over 400 hp, offering enhanced performance and more dynamic handling for those seeking a spirited drive.
19:38 Interior design of the Smart #3
The Smart #3’s interior is built around a high central tunnel and wraparound cockpit layout. While some may find the space slightly enclosed, it provides a focused driving position and good ergonomics. Material quality is generally high, with soft fabrics and faux leather finishes, although some harder plastics remain.
Interior space is surprisingly generous, especially in the rear. At 1.90 m tall, the presenter was able to sit comfortably behind himself. Boot space is rated at 370 litres, and while the front trunk is minimal, it’s suitable for charging cables and small items. Overall, the Smart #3 makes good use of its footprint.
24:24 Technology of the Smart #3
At the centre of the Smart #3’s tech offering is a 12.8-inch touchscreen with a fast and intuitive interface. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, alongside built-in navigation, streaming apps, and even casual games. Voice control is supported via a digital avatar interface.
Additional tech features include heated seats, a heated steering wheel, multiple USB ports, wireless charging, and a high-quality 360-degree camera system. While a heads-up display is absent, software updates are frequent and recently enabled vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, showing the brand’s commitment to future-proofing the vehicle.
27:49 Driver assistance of the Smart #3
Smart Pilot Assist offers Level 2 driving automation, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic lane changes when the indicator is used. The system performs reliably on motorways, keeping the car centred and maintaining safe distances with minimal intervention.
On winding roads, the driver assistance shows some limitations, particularly in tight corners where manual input is needed. However, for highway travel, the system is robust and intuitive, with clear driver feedback and easy controls. Auto-parking is available only on higher trims like Brabus and Premium.
