Der Geher in Odenthal: Altenberg

Описание: I am Der Geher and it's vacation time. The path leads through Altenberg, a district of Odenthal. On the street Am Rösberg, the path leads past the cemetery and, after a short underpass, reaches the Cistercian monastery. A brief look into the cathedral and an underpass later, the route continues along Altenberger-Dom-Straße. The ancestral seat of the Counts of Berg is located in the forest next to the river Dhünn. The path ends at a game reserve.

Berge Castle was built in 1060 and left to monks from Morimond Abbey in 1133 when the counts moved to a new castle above the Wupper. The monks founded Altenberg Abbey here, but it was soon relocated to the valley along the Dhünn. Altenberg Cathedral is not a bishop's seat, but merely an indication of the size of the church. Construction began in 1255, the large window dates from 1400 and is the largest Gothic stained glass window north of the Alps, measuring around 144 m².
