This Beautiful Slow Melody Solo ’AN UNTOLD STORY’ By Paul Lovatt-Cooper Was Written At The Request Of Owen Farr, To Add A New And Fresh Work For The Tenor Horn Repertoire. The Solo Opens With A Lyrical Motif Which Introduces the Melody Line Played by The Solo Horn. In 6/8 Time, The Horn Plays This Romantic Melody As Various Instruments Take Turns in Accompanying The Soloist. The Piece Gradually Builds In Texture With The Cornets Taking Over the Melody Line, And This Allows The Soloist To Explore The Lyrical Dexterity Of The Tenor Horn Whilst Playing The Counter Melody. In Complete Symmetry To The Opening, The Solo Then Dies Away With The Soloist Playing A Free Cadenza Passage, Bringing An End To This Beautifully Crafted Work.

OWEN FARR - Tenor Horn Soloist

Owen Farr, Like Herbert L. Clarke, Is Is Regarded As One Of The Top Brass Instrumentalists Of Our Generation, As Well As Being Regarded As One Of The Top Tenor Horn Soloists In The World, If Not The Best. His Involvement With Brass Music Began When He Joined Pontypool Brass Band At The Age Of Six, Later He Joined ’The Gwent County Youth Brass Band’ As Well As ’The National Youth Brass Band Of Wales’ Progressing To Be Principal Horn In Both Ensembles.

Owen’s emerging Talent Was Recognised In 1995, When As A Member Of ‘The BTM Brass Band’, He Became ‘THE BRITISH OPEN JUNIOR SOLO CHAMPION’ - And Later Was Appointed To Play Solo Horn With ‘The Tredegar Band’ In Wales, Before Studying At The Royal Northern College Of Music. Six Months Later, He Joined The World Famous ‘Williams Fairy Engineering Band’ Under The Baton Of Howard Snell And Brian Hurdley, And Since Moving Back To Wales, Owen Was Principal Horn Of The Cory Band.

Owen Is Not Only A World Class Soloist, But Is Also Dedicated To Improving The Pedagogy Of The Tenor Horn, And Is Constantly Exploring Ways Of Improving Teaching Methods For The Instrument He Loves, And This Can Be Clearly Seen In The Positions He Now Holds Both In ‘The Birmingham Conservatoire’ And ‘The Royal Welsh College Of Music And Drama’. Owen Is Renowned For His Lyrical Tone And Stunning Technical Precision, And Continues To Commission And Promote New Works For The Tenor Horn, Such As The New Tenor Horn Concertos Written For Owen By Well Known Composers Such Lucy Pankhurst, Darrel Barry And Gareth Wood, With Gareth Wood’s New Tenor Horn Concerto Being Featured On This Particular CD.
