Join us for our next folk evening on Tuesday 21st September at 8:00pm where we will be showcasing Jo Freya!Another late (ish) night journey into the folk music passions, pastimes, performances and studies from the folk music circuit. Wonderfully diverse music and fascinating lives!
Home Stage is thrilled to present an icon of the folk scene, a clarinettist, saxophonist, singer and composer, the one and only, Jo Freya. Streamed online, tune in to witness performances of her deft musical skills alongside her intriguing writing and compositions. Described as “the chameleon of Folk and mistress of reinvention,” join us as we explore her impact on the global folk scene.
Over nearly half a century, Jo has played a significant part in several folk revolutions. Beginning her professional folk career in her early teens, Jo helped focus the English folk scene more towards English traditional songs and tunes whilst playing in the 8-piece band, The Old Swan Band. Still popular to this day, The Old Swan Band continues to cultivate and showcase English traditional music on the folk scene, allowing Jo to remain true to her folk foundations.
Alongside this, Jo is a member of the reputed band Blowzabella, pioneering yet another - very different - folk revolution. Blowzabella infuses English traditional music with European folk styles, creating a unique sound that is both typically English yet somehow fluently European. The music of Blowzabella stands as a symbol of community across the world and the songs and tunes composed by Jo for this band have gone on to be extremely influential and popular, being named “standards” in the European and British folk repertoire.
Not only musically influential, Jo is also a figure of inspiration for women in folk. As a soloist, as a composer, as the only female member of Blowzabella and as part of all-female folk groups Token Women and Moirai, Jo encourages women to partake in the folk industry in a variety of forms. In addition, Jo has written shows for theatre that explore the representation of women in folksong, namely her first show Perjuring Little Whore.
Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to learn about the inspiring woman that is Jo Freya.
