Die Walküre: Wotan’s Farewell and Magic Fire Music (Act Three). Wotan has decided to punish his daughter Brünnhilde for her disobedience: she will lie in a deep sleep upon the Valkyries’ rock. Whoever finds her there and awakens her will make her his wife. Brünnhilde pleads with Wotan to surround the rock with a ring of fire that only the bravest hero will be able to cross. Wotan embraces Brünnhilde and promises to grant her wish. He bids his beloved daughter farewell and sends her into a deep sleep with a kiss on the eyes. Then, he summons the fire god Loge to the rock to create a sea of flames that can be crossed only by one who does not fear Wotan’s spear.

Hans Knappertsbusch (1888–1965). All the recordings in this compilation were made during the last ten years of Knappertsbusch’s life. His interpretations of Wagner are marked by a majestic and reverent solemnity, and they stem directly from the tradition of Hans Richter, a veteran of Bayreuth, under whom Knappertsbusch served as assistant conductor at the Bayreuth festivals between 1910 and 1912.

Knappertsbusch was a conservative rather than a reactionary Wagnerian. In 1933, he signed the infamous "Protest by the Richard Wagner City of Munich" against Thomas Mann’s essay Richard Wagner’s Suffering and Greatness, which the German fascist movement condemned as decadent. However, it is important to note that in 1936 he resigned from his position as Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera due to his opposition to National Socialism. After witnessing the fall of the Third Reich from Vienna, he became an enthusiastic—if occasionally reserved—supporter of Wieland Wagner’s radical and iconoclastic post-war productions in Bayreuth.

The Vienna Philharmonic, Knappertsbusch’s orchestra for these recordings, had worked with him since the 1930s and was well acquainted with his idiosyncratic style. He did not emphasize extensive rehearsals with repeated run-throughs. Instead, he relied on the experience and musicality of the orchestra members, along with the inspiration of the moment.

Notable Soloists .. The role of Kundry in the Parsifal excerpt is performed by the legendary Kirsten Flagstad (1895–1962), widely regarded as the leading Wagnerian soprano of the 1930s and 1940s. Though retired from the stage by the time this 1959 recording was made, her voice remained remarkably powerful, allowing her to continue recording into her later years. Her warm, maternal tone was ideally suited to Kundry’s narration ("I saw the child at its mother’s breast").

The soloists in the excerpts from Die Walküre and Tristan belong to a later generation. The renowned American bass-baritone George London (1920–1984) had sung Amfortas under Knappertsbusch in the 1951 Parsifal production at Bayreuth and recorded a Wagner recital with him in 1958. Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson (born 1918) succeeded Flagstad in the dramatic repertoire. Isolde became one of her most acclaimed roles, and she recorded excerpts from it for the first time with Knappertsbusch in 1960.
