This composition was inspired by Hawaiian pahu (drum) maker, Cioci, who had a dream that he was playing an unusually shaped pahu while chanting in a clearing in the forest. Upon awaking, he constructed a drum exactly like that in his dream. The first musical section is based on the Hawaiian mele (song) “Ua Nani o Nu'uanu.” The second section is influenced by a Tahitian rhythm, ‘titau,’ arranged as a solo section. This composition is dedicated to the native people of Hawaii in support of their struggle to control their land, their culture, and their destiny. Performed during the Kenny Endo 40th Anniversary Celebration Tour in 2015 at the Soka Performing Arts Center in Aliso Viejo, CA.
Performers: Kenny Endo, Kaoru Watanabe, Abe Lagrimas, Chizuko Endo
