WHEN LIFE IS LIKE A BREATH | My Heart Attack, God’s Mercy, and the Legacy We Leave Behind

A few weeks ago, I came face-to-face with the sobering truth that life really is a breath. Psalm 39:5 says, “You have made my days a mere handbreadth… everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure.”

When your heart suddenly goes into crisis, you don’t just read verses like that — you feel them. One moment you’re upright, the next you’re wondering, “Is this it?” But even before the pain hit my chest, before the silence, before the fear… God was already holding my life.

James 4:14 puts it bluntly: “You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” It’s humbling, isn’t it? And it raises a real question we all have to face at some point: What will remain of my life when my breath is gone?

Because let’s be honest — memories fade. People move on quickly. Even great lives become footnotes unless something deeper is left behind.
This heart attack made me think about legacy — not fame, not applause, but the mark we leave for the Kingdom of God. A legacy isn’t built on our achievements, but on our obedience, our love, our faith, and the Gospel we live and share.

For many, the brevity of life brings sadness. For others, it brings hope that suffering won’t last forever. Paul captures this hope so well: “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18)

After what happened, I see life through a different lens. What I build, what I say, what I leave behind — it matters. Legacy isn’t about being remembered… it’s about pointing people to the One who never forgets.

And despite our frailty, God places astounding value on our lives.
“What is mankind that you are mindful of them?” (Psalm 8:4) - The answer is found in the Gospel:
John 3:16 — His love sent Christ.
Hebrews 2:9 — Christ suffered death for everyone.
1 John 4:10 — He became the atoning sacrifice so we could have eternal life.

Our breath may be short, but our future in Christ is endless.
Our days may be few, but His mercy is forever.
Our memory may fade from earth, but our names are written in heaven.

Revelation 21:4 gives the final word: “He will wipe every tear… there will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain.”

So while life here is brief, it’s not meaningless. Let’s live with purpose. Let’s leave a legacy that points generations to Jesus. And let’s remember — the best truly is yet to come.
