I set foot on the northern tip of Newfoundland, where the land seems to look straight toward Greenland. Here, at the L'Anse aux Meadows site, the wind whistles through the foundations of the sod houses and the few reconstructed beams. It was here, at the very beginning of the 11th century, that a group of Vikings from Greenland established the first known European encampment in North America.
This isn't a legend. These are excavations, objects, nailed wood, iron slag, solid remains. Leif Erikson's camp, perhaps, or that of other explorers who came long before Columbus. Walking among this windswept grass, I'm immersed in another era, somewhere between history and myth. Reconstructions of longhouses allow you to imagine what this small Scandinavian village must have been like on Native American soil.
Then head due south to St. John's, Newfoundland, the capital. Here, it's an explosion of color. Each house seems to have been painted to counter the winter gray: bright red, sunny yellow, soft green, electric blue. I strolled down Jellybean Row, climbed Signal Hill, the promontory overlooking the harbor and the ocean, where Marconi received the first transatlantic radio transmission. And I saw the Cape Spear Lighthouse, the easternmost point of the North American continent.
Saint John is a city of raw, maritime, and warm charm. One can sense the memory of cod fishermen, Irish and British sailors, and settlers who came to brave the harshest coasts of the North Atlantic. The harbor is sheltered by a narrow inlet, often shrouded in fog, sometimes crossed by icebergs from Labrador.
Here, the cultural roots run deep. The music, the language, and the local expressions are unique. #Newfoundland #AnseAuxMeadows #SaintJohnNewfoundland #VikingRemains #CapeSpear #ColorfulHouses #SignalHill #VikingHistory #NordicCulture #NordicExploration #VikingVillage #NewfoundlandAndLabrador #TravelCanada #AtlanticCanada #LabradorSea #HistoryAmerica #CapeSpearLighthouse #JellybeanRow #ArchaeologicalSite #VikingHeritage
