In 2025, the Southeast Asian Games make their return to Thailand just 18 years since Nakhon Ratchasima last played host in 2007, and for the event's 33rd edition held from 9 to 20 December, Thailand had set stage to these Games at two cities - Chonburi and Bangkok (this marks the Thai capital's first SEA Games hosting gig since 1985). The Games, however, were originally due to be held in three cities with Songkhla being planned to host some sports, but the organizers had to relocate several events to Bangkok and Chonburi after the province was hardly hit by flooding caused by Cyclone Senyar.

The Thailand Games featured around 574 events across 50 sports, and it marked a historic first in the SEA Games as it includes the most internationally recognized sports that are also contested in the Olympics - surfing, however, was the only core summer Olympic sport to not be included in these Games. Additionally, two winter sports - ice hockey and ice skating (figure skating and short track speed skating were categorized together as disciplines rather than being sports of their own right) - returned to the programme after being absent for 2021 and 2023 due to lacking venues. Additionally, there were debuts for canoe slalom, coastal rowing, kabaddi, kiteboarding, Makruk (a Thai form of chess), teqball and woodball, as well as fast-paced variants of team sports such as baseball5 and hockey5s.

The official anthem for the Thailand 2025 SEA Games is entitled "1%", sung by Thai-Belgian singer Violette Wautier and featuring rapper F.HERO (he also provided the song's composition and lyrics) in the Thai version, and XOflow rapper Twopee Southside in the English variant. The song conveys an encouraging message of hope, never giving up, and the spirit of victory, through powerful words that even if an individual only had 1% of his or her strength, it could become 100% if one's heart still perseveres.
