Paramotor review powered paragliding comparison: Black Hawk 313 & Paratoys Nucleon vs Flat Top Ninja & K2 Paraglider. "What is the difference between top of the line equipment and bottom of the line". This is a common question for people interested in the sport. Why do all the best pilots like Team Redbull and the World & National Champion fly the Flat Top vs the slightly cheaper paratoys gear.
First the Flat Top Ninja is 54 lbs vs 75 lbs for the Black Hawk 313. This is a huge gigantic difference. Then because the Flat Top Ninja is also considerably more powerful the power to weight ratio of the Flat Top Ninja is unmatched in the industry. That's only a start though. Safety is the biggest reason. The Flat Top has incredibly well designed crumple zones that can absorb up to even terminal velocity impacts such as a full stall. This is just one of the reasons zero people have been killed on Flat Tops and quite a few have died on Black Hawk paramotors.
The next huge injury you see on cheaper units is hands & bodyparts getting into the propeller. Zero of these injuries have ever happened on Flat Tops because of the incredibly strong cage design that has kevlar netting as an integral part of the system. Each kevlar line on the Flat Top is 400 lb strength and it is held in place with very specially designed rivets. The Flat Top netting is so strong that you can literally stand on it without flexing it back into the prop. This along with the Flat Top cage design which maximizes the clearance between the netting and prop in the most imporant places have clearly been a reason for the safety record of the Flat Top. Another important key feature is the prop extending slightly out the back of the cage. If you fall backwards it is a natural tendency to put your hands out behind you to catch yourself so it is extremely important that the prop strikes the ground first and all at once so that it stops instantly instead of continues spinning behind you. Interestingly enough this is also the safest thing for the extremely durable carbon fiber prop on the Flat Top which is almost never damaged in a fall.
The quick release harness on the Flat Top could have prevented a recent death that happened on a Black Hawk where a pilot accidently landed in water and since the Black Hawks sink to the bottom immediately and have so many buckles the pilot couldn't free themselves and drowned. The Flat Top has had several water incidents as well but in these cases not only did the Flat Top paramotor float but the quick release harness allowed the pilot to free themselves in less than 1 second so they could quickly swim to safety.
