Описание: This song has sort of a comical history to me. In 1927, the "Wales Padlock Act" was introduced in New York City. As part of prohibition, it allowed any entertainment venue presenting what was deemed "illicit" material to be pad locked for one year as a fine. As part of that law, it also banned the depiction of any cast member to play a homosexual or lesbian character. This law was in effect until 1967. Blantantly flaunting this law, Broadway actress and nightclub/speakeasy owner, Mary Louise Cecelia "Texas" Guinan, opened her own Broadway show entitled, "Padlocks of 1927" at the Schubert Theatre, making fun of the new law. During the show, she wore a bracelet with multiple small padlocks charms, which started a fashion fad in women's jewelry. This song was one of the songs in that show, which ran for an amazing 95 performances. George Gershwin often played the piano at her club for weathly patrons. #gershwin #prohibition #lgbtq #broadway
