General George Washington orchestrated a surprise attack on British-held Trenton during the Revolutionary War. Fresh troops under Generals Sullivan and Gates and local militia bolstered Washington’s army. Considering an assault near Mount Holly, intelligence from Joseph Reed shifted the focus to Trenton. A distraction by militia at the Battle of Iron Works Hill on December 23 deviated Hessian forces, solidifying Washington’s plans. The Continental Army prepared to cross the Delaware River before dawn on December 26, targeting the unsuspecting Hessian garrison. The strategy included multiple diversionary crossings led by Cadwalader and Ewing, intended to confuse the enemy and cut off escape routes. The campaign could extend to capturing Princeton and New Brunswick if successful. Boats were sourced from Malta Island, guarded at McConkey's Ferry. A coordinated assembly of various vessels, piloted by Daniel Bray, Jacob Gearhart, and Jacob Ten Eyck, with experienced maritime personnel including Glover's Marblehead Regiment and local ferry operators, facilitated the crossing—a turning point in America's fight for independence.
