In 1983 (40 years ago this year) the BBC showed a Sunday evening costume drama set during the Civil Wars of the 1640s, 'By the Sword Divided'. The drama ran for two series, covering the fortunes of an extended family split on either side of the conflict from just before the war, to the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660.
In this video, Cromwell Museum Curator, Stuart Orme, looks back at the series and considers whether it was one of the most accurate depictions yet shown on screen of the Civil Wars and Republic of the 1640s and 1650s.
