The bin holding the substrate is raised on bricks to allow airflow underneath. A central perforated pipe sits at the base of the bin, with 4–5 holes drilled around its lower section to promote air movement through the compost.
The maximum distance between aeration points should be about 13.7 inches (35 cm), though 12 inches is ideal. Proper aeration and consistent moisture are the most important design and maintenance factors—moisture management is the heart of the Johnson–Su bioreactor.
You can keep adding material until the bin is full. Each addition of carbon- and nitrogen-rich waste (plant or food matter) triggers heating as the composting process accelerates.
Thanks to the bioreactor’s design, there’s ample airflow, so you never need to turn the compost to produce rich, high-quality material.
