Join me on this adventure as I improve my bargaining skills, eat awful ice cream and try a local caramel dessert in the Russian city of Vietnam, Nha Trang.
I start my night at the opposite end of Nha Trang's Walking Street market (Nguyen Thi). The street is lively, packed and full of lights, smells and noises. Shops are lined up on both sides of the street selling various stuff such as clothing, bags, jewelry...
I start walking through between the crowd wandering if there is anything I might be interested in, until a Manchester United hat catches my eyes. In Vietnam, especially in touristic areas, the prices at markets are hies up at least 4 times. So, a hat for 200k VND priced for tourists is probably no more than 50k for a local. Bargaining is expected and part of the market culture.
Vietnamese vendors really know how to drive a hard bargain too.
I tried to bargain from 200k to 100k for the hat. Aunty went down to 120k which is only a dollar more from my price, but I wanted to test my bargaining skills. I then walk around trying to find another hat place, but they drove harder bargain.
I walked back to the same shop and right next to it was another one selling the same hat. After some back and forth, I was able to get the hat for 130k. The first vendor refused to deal with me again and was watching the entire deal happen in front of her eyes. I felt bad but this lady had a nicer vibe, and I ended up giving her extra to make her smile.
Then I set off to have some sweets. I went to a market that was unfortunately closed on the Sunday, but a few stalls were still open. I found one dessert shop and after some thinking, I ordered a strawberry and vanilla Ice cream. I was really awful, it tasted old and artificial, and the biscuit tasted bad ad very soft. Not to mention the ants walking all over the chocolate bottle. Threw that away and went for a walk in the local streets.
Then finally find a dessert spot. The lady was very nice. I ordered a caramel pudding dessert called Dong Suong. The dessert is made with a tangy and sweet caramel syrup in the bottom, with two round pieces of caramel pudding and crushed ice on the side. I was actually very impressed. It's a very light and sweet desert and a great combination of flavors. But I also tried a type of desert that's put in a small round container, that is one of the weirdest textures I've tried. It reminded me of eating squid with the Nasi Lemak in Malaysia.
Nha Trang is a beautiful city day and night, it has its lively spots as well as its calm areas.
