SURNAME MEANING
Welsh is a Scottish surname denoting a person from Wales or a person who spoke the Welsh language, derived from the Old English word wēalisc.
The form Walsh was more common in Ireland where it denoted any of the Welshmen who arrived in the wake of Strongbow's Anglo-Norman invasion of 1170.
The form Welch is the English variant of the surname.

NOBLE TITLES HELD
The Walsh Baronetcy of Little Ireland in the County of Waterford was created in the Baronetage of Ireland in 1645 for Sir James Walsh. The title became extinct on the death of Sir Robert Walsh, 2nd Baronet, c. 1690.
The Walsh Baronetcy of Ormathwaite in the County of Cumberland and of Warfield in the County of Berkshire, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom in 1804 for Sir John Walsh, who was born John Benn, but assumed by royal license the surname Walsh in accordance with the will of his wife’s uncle, Sir John Walsh (1726-1795), a scientist and Secretary to the Governor of Bengal, purchased the estate of Warfield Park. He was employed by the East India Company, served as High Sheriff of Radnorshire, and sat as a Member of Parliament for Bletchingley.
Sir John Walsh, 2nd Baronet, High Sheriff of Berkshire and Radnorshire and a Member of Parliament, was elevated to the peerage as Baron Ormathwaite in 1868. He was succeeded by his son, Arthur Walsh, 2nd Baron, who was also a Member of Parliament.

Walsh of Mul Hussey, co. Roscommon, Ireland - descended from Richard Walsh of Brenagh, son of Hoyle Walsh who built Castle Hoel or Hoyle, son of Phiulip (fl. 1174), who is said to be a nephew of Rees ap Griffith, Prince of South Wales. Philip had two brothers: David and Geoffrey. David was the ancestor of Walsh of Carrickmines.

William Walsh (1662-1708) of Abberley Hall, Worcestershire was an English poet and critic and a Whig politician who sat in the English and British House of Commons from 1698 to 1708, a descendant of Sir Walter Walshe.
Saunders Welch (1711-1784) was an 18th-century English businessman, justice of the peace for Middlesex, and policing pioneer.
David Welsh (1793-1845) was a Scottish divine and academic. He was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1842.
Sir Nicholas Walsh (1542–1615) was an Irish judge who was Speaker of the Irish House of Commons in the Parliament of 1585–86, son of James Walsh and grandson of Patrick Walsh, both mayors of Waterford, Ireland. His son was Sir Nicholas Walsh of Piltown (1590-1643), one of the leaders of Confederate Ireland during the Irish Rebellion of 1641.
