In a little under a year, Gambians will head to the polls to choose a president. As the election draws closer, parties and independents are in talks to forge alliances. So is the UDP, according to Lamin Manneh, but for them, the alliance has to be party-led and led by their candidate.
Darboe has been leading the party since its founding in 1996, and his selection was not appreciated by a group of people now led by KMC Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, who was elected into office on a UDP ticket. Bensouda now leads the Unite Movement for Change.
The UDP leadership just finished its first nationwide tour since the selection of Darboe as its flagbearer. This tour accorded the party an opportunity to assess the damage, if any, they may have suffered through the creation of the UMC.
In this edition of Verified, Manneh reveals the UDP's preferred roadmap to a coalition, speaks of their relationship with the Jammeh-leaning "No-to-Alliance" movement, and shares his assessment of his party's strength ahead of the presidential election.
