Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a huge sandstone monolith in the middle of the Northern Territory's arid "Red Centre." Alice Springs, 450 kilometers distant, is the next big town. Uluru is revered to indigenous Australians and is estimated to have formed approximately 550 million years ago. It is located inside Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which also features the Kata Tjuta formation's 36 red-rock domes.
