The wastewater co-produced from Marcellus Shale gas wells (produced water, PW) is currently being considered as a domestic source of lithium. However, the radium (Ra) composition of the water and the wastes generated from enhanced treatment methods remain inadequately characterized.
This presentation provides a summary of newly compiled Ra-226 and Ra-228 activity data from Marcellus Shale PW measured between 2012 and 2023. These data, combined with previously reported Ra activities, represent the largest spatially referenced compilation of Ra activity measurements from produced water sourced from the Marcellus Shale to date.
The median PW Ra activity in the data presented here is 7,946 pCi/L (interquartile range = 11,000 pCi/L). However, Ra activities in this positively skewed dataset can exceed ~30,000 pCi/L in northeast and north-central Pennsylvania.
Furthermore, mass-yield estimates for waste generated from a water treatment scenario indicate the production of 103,000 (CI: 1,200–450,000) metric tons of radiobarite with a median Ra activity of 849 (CI: 30–9,500) pCi/g.
Additional regional trends in Ra concentrations and isotopic ratios will be discussed.
